Photohio.org - Help

Here is some information to help you with some common questions about the Photohio site. This information will be updated frequently.

a.     Why are there two search “places”?

Photohio.org consists of two types of databases.  These two types databases have very different goals.  You are welcome to try your searches on both databases.  For more technical information about the two database systems visit the Details section of the site.

The first database is a collection of mostly photographs.  The goal for the items in the collection was to be able to integrate search results from this collection into the results from searches that were conducted on the CLC library catalogs.

The second database is a collection of mostly text pages.  The goal for the items in this collection was to be able to search the entire text of every scanned page.  Because the database engine available to search the library catalogs was not able to handle this large amount of text (over 1.2 million words) another system had to be used.

b.     How can I search for a particular year?

If you are looking for a particular year simply add that year to your keyword search query.

How to search for photos concerning the Ohio Pen fire of 1930:
    1. Start a search.
    2. Then choose keyword search.
    3. Enter "ohio pen fire 1930" (without the quotes).
    4. Your search results will include all Ohio Pen Fire photos from the year 1930.
    5. If your search returns no results or few results please try the search without the year.

Note: There are limitations to this method.  Not all images have dates in their record. This is because no date could be associated with the image when it was cataloged.  If you do find a "dateless" image and think you can associate a date with it, please let us know.  You can send us an email, or click on the feedback button while you're viewing the image.
